  • About the Book

If you're reading this, you probably bought yourself a GPS, or got one as a present. Congratulations! You can mouse around on the web and find lots of neat things to do with it. For example, almost everyone has heard of Geocaching by now; a great outdoor treasure hunt that requires a GPS and may test your stamina and ingenuity.

Since I've been making maps with computers since 1967, I've been frustrated that so few people know that their GPS is a fabulous tool for mapmaking. I didn't think much of mapping my business travel and windsurfing expeditions; it just seemed like the logical thing to do. Then, my marketing manager suggested I write a book related to what Tele Atlas does. I explained the concept to my boss Mike Gerling and to Jack Dangermond at ESRI, and both decided to roll the dice and see what happened. "Fun with GPS" is the result of their leap of faith; I'm very grateful for their support.

    Reviews and Interviews:

Matteo Luccio just wrote a very generous review of the book in GIS Monitor. This means a lot to me because Matteo really knows a lot about GPS; he used to edit GPS World Magazine. Scroll half-way down this link:

  • Last summer, Adena Schutzberg ran this interview in Earth Observation Magazine; thanks again, Adena:

  • Marketing books:

I spent a lot of time at the ESRI show with ESRI Press folks and just about every journalist in GIS, many of whom have written books; they all told me a lot about how books get sold. Fun with GPS is distributed by the Independent Publishers Group, which had already prepared channels to booksellers such as Amazon. I've been painfully aware that Amazon listed the book for over a year before it was available, but I had no idea how many sites respond to press releases and/or allow you to order through Amazon.

Here's an example. I guess after seeing Mary and Hero, no house pet will feel complete without its own GPS:
